The Life of Luca Della Robbia

Luca della Robbia (1400-1482) was a Florentine sculptor noted for his terracotta roundels. Della Robbia developed a pottery glaze that made his creations more durable in the outdoors and thus suitable for use on the exterior of buildings. His work is noted for its charm rather than the drama of the work of some of his contemporaries.

In 1556, the penalty in Britain for 'owling' (smuggling wool) was to cut off the offender's left hand and nail it up in a public place. In 1695 a law was passed stating that 'such person as shall be convicted as being concerned in exporting of wool who shall not be able to answer penalties, be transported to the plantations as slaves'. The plantations were in Jamaica and the British Caribbean.
